Mr Redfern has performed thousands of minimally invasive foot and ankle operations in over a decade of experience in treating patients with these techniques.

Any surgeon in the UK offering the MICA technique must have trained under Mr Redfern, his French co-inventor, or surgeons previously trained by them. Mr Redfern was first to introduce these techniques to Northern Europe as well as Australia and more recently the USA.

Almost all surgeons practicing percutaneous surgery in the UK (and hundreds of surgeons worldwide) have been through one of Mr Redfern’s training courses to learn his techniques.

Philosophy

  • Knowing when to operate is equally important to knowing how to operate

  • No patient wants to undergo an operation unless strictly necessary

  • Surgery should be performed with modern keyhole techniques where possible

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Mr Redfern is a true pioneer in this emerging field of “key-hole” surgery.

In 2008 he began collaborating with a French surgeon and together they have developed new less invasive operations to treat many foot and ankle problems. Together they invented the MICA technique for treating bunions. Mr Redfern has performed more than 2,500 of these operations as well as trained many hundreds of surgeons worldwide in this and other minimally invasive techniques.

Minimally invasive surgery includes both ‘percutaneous surgery’ and ‘arthroscopic surgery’. These techniques involve inserting specially designed instruments through tiny skin incisions to perform surgery under video and/or x-ray guidance. These modern state of the art techniques are associated with lower risk of infection, less wound or scar problems, less pain, and early return to function.

Surgical Craft

Surgery remains a craft that is learnt over many years of medical training and clinical practice. There is no substitute for experience and skilled hands. In order to achieve the excellent clinical outcomes that patients rightly expect, it requires both skill in the art of diagnosis and mastery of surgical skills in theatre.

The foot and ankle is one of the most complicated and highly stressed areas of the body.

Mr Redfern’s background surgical training in orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery have laid the foundations for his mastery of developing successful less invasive operations to treat common problems in the foot and ankle.

Background

Mr Redfern is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. He graduated from the University of London in 1993. He underwent a thorough breadth of early training including plastic surgery, neurosurgery and emergency medicine. He taught anatomy at Cambridge University and then returned to London to undertake higher surgical training at St George’s Hospital. He completed his fellowship training at Johns Hopkins University, USA.

He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2004 where he ran the foot and ankle department treating all foot and ankle problems including severe trauma and sports injuries.

Mr Redfern moved into full time independent practice in 2012. He is part of the highly specialised team at the London Foot & Ankle Centre and also runs a centre of excellence in Brighton at The Montefiore Hospital where he has served as Medical Director.
